PHAP Team 2018

Hello! My name is Shiv, and I’m a University of Virginia graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in Astronomy. Since graduating, I began my gap year working both as a long-term substitute teacher and medical scribe, while fulfilling my passion for meaningful volunteering through the local hospital and also across my community. Along the way, I studied for the MCAT and finally completed it July of 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic threw some roadblocks in my path, but I’m finally on track for where I want to be at this moment in time. I will be starting medical school in the Fall of 2022!

When I first started my pre-med journey in college, I was so overwhelmed with the entire process and I didn’t know what I was doing. After extensive research on being pre-med, using the internet and my college’s resources, I felt confident to secure a job as a UVA Pre-Health Advising Peer (PHAP), which is basically a student-version of a Pre-Health Advisor. This means I was among six students that were chosen to help guide every single pre-med in school that needed help!

I gained valuable experience from my PHAP job; I ran workshops and classes on how to apply for medical school, I conducted mock interviews with students, I aided with personal statement and essay writing, and I helped students plan out their four-year undergraduate schedules, to determine the most optimal semesters for taking certain classes. My main focus, however, was figuring out how to completely master the beast known as the MCAT, through hundreds of hours of accumulating resources and researching effective, proven study methods. Even though I’ve graduated and no longer work as a PHAP, I want to continue to help pre-meds on their journey to get into medical school.

This website serves as a passion project for me, to help out as many people as possible navigate the long, confusing road to medical school. I hope it can help you in some way!
